But what is pancreatic cancer? Why is it that according to the study, a 5-year survival is much less than 5% only: A disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. This is also called exocrine cancer. Estimated new cases reach 37,680 and 34,240 deaths from pancreatic cancer in the United States in 2008: Depending on the extent of the tumor at the time of diagnosis, the prognosis is generally regarded as poor, with few victims still alive five years after diagnosis, and complete remission still extremely rare.
Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is difficult because the symptoms are so non-specific and varied. Common symptoms include pain in the upper abdomen that typically radiates to the back and is relieved by leaning forward loss of appetite, significant weight loss and painless jaundice Therefore, pancreatic cancer is often not diagnosed until it is advanced.
This condition also has predisposing factors such as age usually in males. Cigarette smoking causes a 75% risk increase, and the risk persists for at least a decade after quitting, Diets high in red meat, obesity, diabetes mellitus, occupational exposure to certain pesticides, dyes, and chemicals related to gasoline, family history and gingivitis or periodontal disease are also added factors.
UPDATEPatrick's representative has issued the following statement to TMZ: "Patrick's physician Dr. George Fisher states, 'Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."
