I first heard of Big Brother show in 2000 from my friend Darryl who's fond of surfing the internet. But I never had the full knowledge on how it was formatted and shown on TV at that time. All I know is that there are a lot of cameras in all parts of the house observing those people inside. I even thought it was another type of porno for paid site on the net, until Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) became a hit in Philippine prime time TV on ABS-CBN.

Big Brother is a reality TV show produced at the Production house of John de Mol Produkties and independent party firm of Endemol, on September 4, 1997. It first started with the working title of the format “de Gouden Kooi” or Golden Cage. The first Big Brother broadcast was by Veronica TV channel in the Netherlands in 1999.

It was a series taken for almost three months. The first series here in the Philippines was shot more than 100 days. A number of people were put together to live inside the house isolated from the outside world, but with those cameras all around the house watching them. They were called as roommates or housemates inside the house and some tasks are given to be fulfilled by them. They will win the cash prize by avoiding to be evicted from the house. Eviction is done periodically via public votation of those candidates which are also their housemates.

The show's name comes from George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which Big Brother is the leader of the dystopian Oceania. And now a primetime hit in almost 70 countries which include Pinoy Big Brother in the Philippines.
